Things to do in Elbphilharmonie
The Elbphilharmonie (Elbe Philharmonic Hall) is a concert hall on the western tip of the HafenCity quarter of Hamburg. The hall was officially inaugurated with concerts and a light show on January 11, 2017. It combines innovative architecture, as the new glassy construction resembles a water wave, in an exceptional location and outstanding acoustics.
Swiss architect firm Herzog & de Meuron designed the Elbphilharmonie on top of the Kaispeicher, which was an old warehouse dating back to the 1960s that used to store Cocoa beans. Currently, the building itself contains a hotel, luxury apartments, restaurants, a health and fitness center, and a public plaza which offers a 360° panoramic view of the city. Elbphilharmonie is the tallest inhabited building in Hamburg standing 354 feet high.
The Elbphilharmonie consists of three concert venues: Grand Hall, Recital Hall and Kaistudios. The Grand Hall can hold up to around 2,100 people and based on its strategic and unique design, there aren't any seats with obstructed views while delivering some of the world's best acoustics. In fact, it is one of the largest and most acoustically advanced concert halls in the world.
The hall can easily be accessed via public transportation. The closest metro station, Baumwall, is only about 1,500 feet away on the Hamburg Metro line 3 and the nearest bus stop, Am Kaiserkai, is less than 500 feet away. If you're in a different part of Hamburg, you can also arrive by taking a ferry to the Elbphilharmonie stop.
