Things to do in Frankfurt Old Town
Located on the northern Main riverbank, the Old Town of Frankfurt used to be Germany’s largest timber-framed old town. After being destroyed during World War II, the district between the Römerberg and Cathedral Square was recently reconstructed to match its past magnificence.
Römerberg is one of the most popular squares in Frankfurt, which is always crowded with tourists from all over the world. In addition to cafes, restaurants, and the typical souvenir stores, here you will find some of the most important sights of the city, such as the Römer, which has been the city hall of Frankfurt am Main since the 15th century, or the early Gothic Alte Nikolaikirche.
Other sights in the old town also include the Domhügel with the Kaiserdom St. Bartholomäus and the Kunsthalle Schirn, the Paulsplatz with the Paulskirche and the Liebfrauenberg with the Liebfrauenberg fountain.
A very special attraction, which can be admired in Frankfurt only since 2018, is the New Frankfurt Old Town. This area was the core of Frankfurt's Old Town until World War II, but the Technical City Hall was built on the site in the 1970s, a large concrete block that towered over almost everything. The complex was finally demolished in 2010 and from 2012 to 2018, 35 houses were built in the area, 15 of which were reconstructed according to historical models.
Stroll through the alleys of Frankfurt's New Old Town and marvel at the squares and streets of Alter Markt, Hühnermarkt, Hinter dem Lämmchen, and Neugasse with their historic buildings. The most elaborate project and showpiece of the New Old Town is the reconstructed house Zur Goldenen Waage.
